In a major judgment,The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld reservation for Other Backward Class (OBC) category in all government-funded higher educational institutes while delivering its verdict on the implementation of 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs in premier institutes of higher education.Following the judgement 49. 5 percent of the seats in higher educational institutes would be reserved. The Schedule Castes (SCs) and Schedule Tribes (STs) enjoy a 22.5 per cent reservation. While the SCs have 15 per cent reservation, for the STs it is 7.5 per cent. This judgment will impact IIMs and other Govt funded / aided institutes and will not impact ISB Hyderabad, SPJIMR Mumbai and other private institutes as the Bench said nothing whether the reservation will be applicable for private institutes. The question was not raised before SC and so the issue wasn't touched at all.Hence it will be interesting to note as how IIMs and ISB will evolve in a longer time frame as far as overall quality of Institutes are concerned.
