Questions related to Pre-MBA Preparation
Q. How many months and
how many hours daily did you devote for preparation to entrance procedures?
A. I devoted four and half months to the preparation. Since I was working
full-time, it was difficult for me to devote more time. But somehow, I managed
to devote 30 hours per week including a hectic weekend.
Q. Did you take up some
coaching institute or you believed in self-study?
A. I have always believed in the concept of "self-study". Though I
referred coaching materials of different institutes, but never took any regular
coaching.
Q. Can you tell us
which are your favorite books, books that you used for preparing for entrance,
books for self-development and books for pure relaxation?
A. Well, I most referred coaching material of different institutes. But
specifically for verbal section, I referred Baron's GMAT book.
Q. When did you start
your preparation?
A. I started preparing from July 2006 after I passed out from Engineering
College.
Q. Did you go for any
coaching?
A. No, I never attended any coaching.
Q. What was your
experience with coaching? Some feedback about faculty, coaching material and
overall experience with particular center.
A. Not Applicable.
Q. What are the others
books and tests which you used for your MBA preparation?
A. I mainly referred to the coaching material of different institutes. I
took a mock test series from one of the leading coaching centers in Delhi.
Q. What was your
strongest and weakest area while preparing for MBA coaching?
A. My strongest areas were Arithmetic and Geometry, and weakest was
Verbal.
Q. Some tips which you
used for mastering Quant, RC, etc.
A. Hard work coupled with self-belief is the key to crack any test. One
must not forget that these two things are inter-related. The more you practice,
the more you will develop self-confidence.
Q. How much time did
you put for MBA preparation everyday? How did you manage this while working
full-time?
A. Since I was working, time devotion was a problem. Time management was
a big issue. I used to carry the English word-list along with me to the office.
Learning 50 words everyday was a part of daily routine and I made sure that
those 50 words are mugged up before I go back home. After reaching back, I used
to devote 2 hours. On weekends, 8 hours of self-study, taking and then analyzing
mock CAT was the story of the day.
Q. Which all Exams and
B-schools you applied to?
A. I applied to most of the top-20 B-schools except IMT, XIMB, GIM.
Q. Your present
B-school and course.
A. Presently, I am pursuing First Year of MBA from VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur.
Q. What procedures your
school has for admission to its MBA programme?
A. After getting a call, VGSOM conducts two rounds, before finally
selecting a candidate. These two rounds are Group Discussion and Personal
Interview, all conducted on a single day. The G.D. round is bit unique, wherein
everybody in the group is given a topic on which they have to present their
individual views. After this, actual group discussion takes place.
In an interview, the most common and the most pertinent question asked from
everyone is, "Why MBA?" Well, this question is not as simple as it sounds. One
needs to really convince the interviewers about it.
Q. What is the range of
score for students who are admitted?
A. Calls are given on the basis of JMET Scores. Qualified candidates are
given ranks along with the sectional and overall scores. A criterion for call to
VGSOM is bit unique, and more stress is given to the profile of a prospective
candidate. Here prior work experience, extra curricular activities, professional
achievements sometimes plays a crucial role in deciding your ticket to VGSOM.
Q. What was your score?
A. I managed to get an All India Rank 1250 with a score of 65
(approximately).
