Every year, Universum Communications, a research and consulting firm, surveys 5,000 graduating MBAs and asks them whom they'd like to work for. This year's list offered some surprises�BMW and Coca-Cola were knocked out of the top ten by newcomers Bain and the Boston Consulting Group. Here are brief profiles of the top ten companies on the list. 1. Google The world's most popular Internet search engine has earned the top spot honestly; not only do they pay well, but they also offer gourmet meals, an on-site masseuse, and ask staff to spend one day a week on their own project. STATS � 20.5% of MBA graduates put Google in their top five most desirable workplaces. � Headquarters are located in lovely Mountain View, California � This technology company employees over 12,000 people � Google's hiring plan says they are looking for people with "the right mix of talent and enthusiasm, who are excited by taking on challenges in a team-oriented environment. 2. McKinsey & Company For the last twelve years McKinsey & Company held the number one spot on the list. At McKinsey, you get immediate access to some of the world's top CEOs, and according to reviews, as an employee you are highly valued and your opinions are important. STATS � 16.3% of MBA graduates put McKinsey in their top five most desirable workplaces � Headquarters are located in New York City � This management-consulting firm employs 6,500 consultants � They plan to "To continue to hire exceptional candidates from a wide range of backgrounds for generalist and specialist consulting roles." 3. Goldman Sachs Fortune Magazine puts Goldman Sachs high in its list of top companies to work for in 2007. This prestigious company boasts famous former CEOs such as New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine and US Treasure Secretary Henry M. Paulson. STATS � 13.95% of MBA graduates put Goldman Sachs in their top five most desirable workplaces � Headquarters are located in New York City, but have offices worldwide � This global investment banking firm employees over 26,000 people � This year, Goldman Sachs plans to hire about 300 B-school graduates into their 2008 full-time associate program, and about 250 MBA candidates (between their first and second years of business school) for summer internships. 4. Bain & Company A newcomer to the top ten, Bain & Company are famous for their employee soccer teams�even going so far as to hold an annual World Cup (Bain Northeast soundly beat Stockholm last year). Bain is also featured in Fortune Magazine's "top companies to work for" list. STATS � 10.99% of MBA graduates put Bain & Company in their top five most desirable workplaces � Headquarters are located in Boston, Massachusetts � This management-consulting firm employs 3,700 people � Bain hires "people who are passionate, motivated and rewarded by...helping our clients achieve results." 5. Boston Consulting Group Ranked #8 on Fortune Magazine's "top companies to work for" list, Boston Consulting Group is well known for valuing employees. Anyone working more than 60 hours a week is placed in a 'red zone' and advised by a company mentor. An intensive push to recruit women to the company has led to 25% of their consultants being female. STATS � 10.89% of MBA graduates put Boston Consulting Group in their top five most desirable workplaces � Obviously, headquarters are located in Boston, Massachusetts � This global management-consulting firm employs 3,300 consultants � They plan "To hire exceptional candidates from a wide range of backgrounds for generalist consulting roles." 6. Apple Not satisfied with being #6 on Fortune Magazine's "top companies to work for" list, it is also listed on the EPA's top companies for commuters, offering emergency rides home and incentives for carpoolers and those that use public transportation. The National Association of Black Engineers also lists Apple as the #35 top employer for, well, black engineers. STATS � 10.78% of MBA graduates put Apple in their top five most desirable workplaces � Headquarters are located in Cupertino, California � The makers of Apple computers, the iPod and the iPhone employ almost 18,000 people � Apple held several recruiting events at top ranked B-schools this year. 7. Microsoft Microsoft has long been known as a great employer. Bill Gates works hard to keep his employees happy, including by offering the best health benefits possible�100% free to full-time employees. Those that work for Microsoft love being part of something that has so extensively shaped the modern world. STATS � 7.82% of MBA graduates put Microsoft in their top five most desirable workplaces � Headquarters are located in spectacular Redmond, Washington � This software company employs over 71,000 people � Microsoft aims "to hire smart and passionate people who truly enjoy tackling the biggest challenges." 8. General Electric General Electric makes all the lists�Fortune 500, Best Place for Black Engineers to work, best benefits packages and more. Known for its casual offices and tendency to promote from within, many people stay at GE for years. STATS � 7.71% of MBA graduates put General Electric in their top five most desirable workplaces � Headquarters are located in Fairfield, Connecticut � This technology, media and financial services company employs 320,000 people � GE is Looking to hire 1,500 top college and MBA graduates into its Leadership Development Programs and other positions in 2008. 9. Nike You need to think like an athlete to work for Nike�and with hiking trails, a rock-climbing wall and giant swimming pool all located at their office campus, you'll have a chance to practice what you preach. STATS � 7.21% of MBA graduates put Nike in their top five most desirable workplaces � Headquarters are located in Beaverton, Oregon � This footwear and athletic apparel company employs 28,000 people � Nike is always looking for MBA graduates in all aspects of their company. 10. Bank of America Well known for its Neighborhood Philanthropy Program and its award-winning customer service, Bank of America also ranks high on the list of "Best Companies for Diversity." You'll also find Bank of America on all the other lists, including the Fortune 500. STATS � 6.91% of MBA graduates put Bank of America in their top five most desirable workplaces � Headquarters are located in Charlotte, North Carolina � This financial services company employs 200,000 people � The bank "plans to increase its recruiting of new B-school graduates in an effort to hire the best MBA talent. For example, the bank seeks bilingual MBAs to help it meet its diverse customer and business needs." |
