Never Rebel against a System, Manage it
In the seventies and eighties, the system was seen as monolithic
monster which has to be fought against, rebelled against till it is
broken and we put a new system in place. This was a dream which was
fuelled by the left leaning ideologists of the Marxist era. May be
the fall of the communist empire has only made us mature. Today most
professionals realize that positive results can be got by working
with the system and not rebelling against it. At an individual level
also it would help if you realize that the system will exist long
after you are gone, any positive influence you want to make will
happen if you are accepted by the system and are able to get your
ideas into the system.
Be a "Learner" not "Learned"
If there are still people who believe that after graduating from an
university or professional institution, the learning phase of your
life is over, then you are well on your way to Jurassic park. Most
modern schools have realized this, there is too much information out
there for you to learn in four to five years of college education, a
good education would provide you pointers to where you can learn
further, be prepared for a lifelong journey of learning ,
re-learning and being able to re-skill to keep pace with the changes
in technology and business.
Be Alert towards Opportunity
One of the many problems with our educational system and our
grooming is that we are asked to be fixated about our life's
ambitions very early in life. I was tutored to be "I want to become
an engineer" very early in life, before I knew what an Engineer was,
it is only after I went through four years of engineering education
did I realize that there are better opportunities out there which I
did not consider. Irrespective of what your early life and schooling
has been, do not be too fixated on what you want to do for a career
or as a business. Our business environment has started growing only
after 1991, it is just 15 years old, as things grow there will be
more opportunities and more hitherto unknown options coming up. Just
be alert to be able to pick up the right opportunity.
