Technology is an Investment and not an
Expense
This applies to both the professional and the individual level. At
an individual level a mobile phone, a Home PC or Laptop is always a
good investment. Learn to make the best use of Internet and E-mail.
Also be very conscious of how change in technology can throw up new
career and business opportunities, the BPO Industry is a case in the
point.
Cultivate Team Skills
Today the dynamism of the business environment and the changes in
technology have meant that it is no longer possible for one
individual to again enough knowledge or expertise even in one area
let alone across multiple areas. Most activities therefore need to
be performed by Teams who can complement each others skills.
Organizations have realized this and now place a heavy premium on
Team skills of an individual, both ability to work in a team and
manage a team. This would apply no matter what level or seniority
you rise to within the organization. If you are an entrepreneur,
beyond a particular point the growth of your business will depend on
having the right people on your team and your ability to encourage
them to work in your team.
Prepare for a Gender Neutral work
environment
This is a touchy subject and I will try to address it in the best
possible way. As the years go by this would more important. In the
past decades, the stress was on Equal Opportunity and Affirmative
action, where women were encouraged by the establishment to join the
workforce. Today this is a given, affirmative action is relevant
only in the public sector. In the private sector, there more women
joining the workforce, this is a resultant of better educational
opportunities available to the middle class. As you enter the
workforce, you will come across instances where you work closely
with the other gender in the same team or as your subordinates or
superiors
