IIM-Bangalore has revealed the selection criteria that it had used to select candidates for the 2007-2009 batch i.e. this year. I guess it is a fallout of the "Right to information act" or a case involving a Visually Challenged candidate and IIM-B this year.
Here is the criteria (there is a good reason to believe that it may be on the same lines even this year).
Every candidated was scored on a scale of 100, with weightage as given below:
CAT Score: 20 Class X Marks: 15 Class XII Marks: 10 Graduation Score: 15 Work Experience / Professional Degree: 5 Group Discussion: 7.5 Group Discussion Summary: 7.5 Personal Interview: 20
Phase 1: Short listing students for GD-PI
1. First short list was made based purely on CAT scores! 85 percentile scores in each section + 90 percentile score overall, for General category students.
2. The students in the first short-list were further divided based on their Past Academic Performance and Work Experience.
For Past Academic Record, weigtages given are as follows:
CAT Scores (20), Class X Marks (15), Class XII Marks (10) and Degree (15).
The class X and XII scores for every board were standarised by dividng the each score by the 90th percentile score of that board. A similar standardization was done for the graduation scores as well across boards and categories (i.e. BE, BCom, BMS etc.).
For candidates with Work Experience, score/weight for their experience was given on a scale of 5 as under:
For candidates having 0 to 3 years of work experience (till Dec 2006):
5 points for 3 years experience and proportionate marks for any other work experience (eg. 20 month experience indicates, 100/36 points).
For candidates having 3 to 12 years of work experience:
For every year of work experience above 3 years, marks were deducted from proportionately from, such that at 12 years of experience, the score is 'zero'. In other words, for 9 years of experience above 3 years, you lose 5 points. (Thus if you had 9 years of work experience, which is 6 years above 3 years, you lose 3.33 points from 5 and your final score for work-experience would be 1.67).
No work-experience points were given students with more than 12 years of work experience.
This indicates that, they had given maximum consideration for 'moderate' work-experience (maximum points for 3 years). Very high work experience was also considered negative (zero points at 12 or more years of work experience).
Only CA's were given points for their Professional Degree as well.
For candidates having Professional Degree (Only CA) and Work-Experience both, the higher of the two points was used for calculation sake.
The candidates were finally short-listed for the GD-PI round based on the above 5 parameters i.e. CAT Scores, X Score, XII Score, Graduation Score, Work Experience / Professional Degree Score.
3. Students from the first short list were called for the GD-PI rounds on the following criteria:
(a) The top 10 candidates in the following areas automatically qualified for the GD-PI: CAT Quant section, CAT Verbal section, CAT DI section, Overall CAT scores, X Score, XII Score, Graduation Score and Work Experience / Professional Degree scores.
(b) All other candidates from first short list were called on the basis of a standarized score computed using a statistical formula.
Phase 2: Short listing students for final calls
The candidates were evaluated in this stage based on three parameters:
1. Group Discussion, 2. Group Discussion Summary, 3. Personal Interview
The GD and GD summary scores of individual evaluators were added to compute the final scores, while that of PI were averaged out.
The quality of the Work-Experience was also evaluated during the PI and was rated on a 5-point scale viz. 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2. This rating was then multiplied by the Work-Experience score computed in Phase 1.
All candidates were asked to provide 'Reference Letters' from their Employers and/or Teachers, and this was also used for their PI evaluation.
The weightage of different scores in Phase 2 were as follows: GD (21.43%), GD Summary (21.43%), PI (57.14%).
The scores in Phase-2 were then added to the scores in Phase-1 (after applying the Work-Experience Quality factor) to arrive at the Final Aggregate Scores.
Phew!! Indeed a very comprehensive selection process. Infact I have simplified the entire procedure for your benefit. The entire procedure is available at the following link:

Some of the learnings from the above:
1. Work-Experience does not matter much if you have a good CAT score or Past Academic Record.
2. CAT scores has the highest weightage in the first stage of selection, while Personal Interview has the highest weightage in the second stage of selection.
3. Candidates were short-listed for the first short-list with scores even as low as 85 percentile in each section and 90 percentile overall.
Note:
In CAT-2006, the 85 percentile scores was:
Data Interpretation: 35 / 100 Verbal Ability: 16 to 18 / 100 Quantitative Aptitude: 37 / 100
Overall 90 percentile: 85 to 90 / 300 |
