In the school's own words...
Beginning in 1998, UNC Kenan-Flagler was among the first business schools to offer a comprehensive curriculum and research agenda in sustainable enterprise. We define sustainable enterprise (SE) as a framework for integrating environmental and social considerations into business processes, systems and strategies.
Every Grey Pinstripes report has cited UNC Kenan-Flagler as a leader in preparing MBAs for social and environmental stewardship. This leadership is rooted in our core values excellence, leadership, integrity, community and teamwork and our mission to: Teach and inspire students to succeed in business and contribute in their communities Produce research that has a meaningful effect on business thought and practice Apply our knowledge in ways that serve our stakeholders, state and larger society
UNC Kenan-Flagler is preparing our MBAs, the next generation of business leaders, with the skills and knowledge needed to identify and capitalize on opportunities that create competitive advantage in the context of sustainability. We are preparing them to lead and manage their organizations for the triple bottom line: financial profitability, ecological integrity and social equity. UNC Kenan-Flagler prepares MBAs for social and environmental stewardship through: o A Sustainable Enterprise Concentration (major) that prepares them to lead strategic approaches to stakeholder issues, value creation in untapped markets and entrepreneurial solutions for urban renewal. In addition to the wide range of SE classes and more than a dozen dedicated to SE at the business school, students also may take courses in such UNC departments as public policy, international studies, social work, city and regional planning and environmental studies. o Net Impact Club, a national MBA student organization supporting socially and environmentally responsible business. UNCs club is one of the largest and most active chapters, with approximately 20 percent of MBAs as members. o Consulting experience on sustainability projects, through a practicum project (for course credit) or summer internships o Sustainability related independent study and internship projects o Speakers, conferences and events on campus covering a wide range of environmental and social management issues o Career development specific to SE, including mentoring, peer counseling and a Career Fair that brings companies with sustainability initiatives to campus. o Center for Sustainable Enterprise (CSE), established in 2001 as a hub of education, research and outreach to MBAs, executives and organizations. MBAs benefit from interaction with CSEs o Advisory Board, senior leaders from companies, government agencies and NGOs supporting the CSEs programs o Base of the Pyramid Learning Laboratory, a consortium of companies, NGOs, multilateral organizations and academics working to create growth opportunities in underdeveloped global markets and address some of the needs of the world's poorest people and communities o Additional centers, including the Urban Investment Strategies Center, Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and Center for Real Estate Development
