Many MBA graduates start their
career in investment banking as an analyst. To grow fast, one should be
extremely dedicated and expert in spreadsheet skills with analytical abilities.
In mid-career, the success usually will depend on the ability to communicate
with clients and get deals done.
At this level, it is also important to have a good understanding of market
trends, the political and macro-economic environment and the deal mechanics.
Some jobs in investment banking and corporate finance call for every strong
mathematical ability. If one is good at mathematics and thinks about getting an
advanced degree in a technical field (studying areas such as stochastic calculus
and differential equations), then take some advanced finance courses, in
Financial Engineering, Option Pricing, Bond Valuation, and apply to a research
department on Wall Street (IFIM Business School, Bangalore, www.ifimbschool.com
offers the course on Financial Engineering). The ability to analyze accounting
numbers critically is important in most analyst positions. Ultimately, one
should aim for the CPA to be the security analyst. CPA helps to become much more
mobile over time. If one strives hard to become a corporate financial analyst
then s/he should pursue the course on CMA (Certified Management Accountant). The
crucial success factors in the profession of investment management / wealth
management are teamwork, good understanding of the market, reacting quickly in
an intelligent manner and excellent analytical skills.
The key to breaking into
investment banking is a good network of contacts. If one does not have good
contacts then s/he can start to develop by going on informational interviews,
attending industry conferences, finding alumni from the B-school, etc. Keep in
mind that the network might not really, for some time. If you are young and
aspirant to make the career in investment banking / wealth management, then try
to get into the best possible B-school to your MBA (Finance) and go for the
quantitative and analytical coursework. The great future is ahead provided one
becomes serious about the career s/he wants to make and serious efforts are
genuinely put in to achieve the goal of the life.
Narrowing
Educational Distances
Securing a visa, clearing
language tests, and arranging for an interminable bank balance - things that
come to mind when we think of higher or specialized studies and even about
studying abroad. But imagine this: switching on your computer, seeing your
professor in another part of the world smiling down at you from the monitor. You
put on your earphones and listen to his hour-long lecture, clear your doubts via
e-mail and get a degree from a foreign university at the end of the course. As
Internet and e-mail bridge time and distance with greater ease, such a scenario
is no longer a pipe dream.
