Question 4 the day: July
15, 2003
The question for the day is from the topic of Coordinate geometry.
- Find the coordinates of the point which divides the line joining (5, -2)
and (9, 6) internally in the ratio 1 : 3.

(2) |
(6, 3) |
(3) |
(0, 6) |

|
(4) |
(3, 6) |
Correct Answer - (1)
Solution:
The coordinates of the point which divides the join of (5, -2) and (9, 6)
internally in the ratio 1 : 3 are
x = ( m1x2 + m2x1 ) / ( m1 +m2 ) =
1(9) + 3(5) / 1 + 3 = 24/4 = 6,
y = (m1y2 + m2y1) / (m1 +m2) = 1(6)
+3(-2 ) / (1+2) = 0/3 = 0
Thus the coordinates of the required point are (6, 0).
