Global Downturn, 22 New Companies Flock to IIM Calcutta During Final Placements
IIM Calcutta successfully
concluded its final placements process on the 11th of March. The process which
began on 8th March came to a close on the 4th day of placements with all
students who participated in the process being offered jobs of their choice
across
sectors. The participation of firms on campus crossed the 100 mark again this
year with around 107 companies making a
bee-line to hire from the batch of 290 PGP students
at IIM Calcutta.
A total of 243 offers had already
been made to the students before the beginning of the final placements. This
included 153 offers made during the laterals process
and the 90 pre-placement offers (PPOs) that
were awarded for excellent performance during the summer internship. The foreign
job locations accepted span a huge and diverse geographic spread with
assignments in UK, US and the Asia Pacific region comprising the bulk. The
Middle East and other European countries are other major locations offered to
the students. India still remained the preferred destination for a majority of
the students with many choosing to stay here and participate in the great Indian
growth story.
Global
Downturn Does Not Affect Recruitment
Notwithstanding the downturn in
the financial sector worldwide, IIM Calcutta has been able to leverage its brand
equity in the finance domain with 34% of the batch opting for jobs in the
financial sector. Some of the top notch firms which hired students from the
batch of 2008 include Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Morgan
Stanley, UBS, ING, JP Morgan and Barclays, amongst others. There have been a
total of 32 I-bank offers made to students here by Slot Zero investment banks.
Consulting firms were preferred
by 26% of the students during the placements. As many as 42 offers were made by
the Slot Zero consulting firms on campus. Major consulting groups like Mckinsey,
Bain, BCG, AT Kearney and Arthur D. Little hired in good numbers.
New
Companies Flock to Campus
The other interesting part of the
placement scene is the amount of new companies which came to campus this year to
recruit bright young talent. "A record 22 new companies were a part of
the placement process this year, which is a testimony to the fact that the
managerial talent of the students of IIM Calcutta is widely recognized," said
Prof. S. D. Moitra, Chairperson, Placement Committee, IIM Calcutta.
Some of the firms coming here
for the first time include o3 Capital, Dawnaday, Ocean Oil, Lodha Group,
Anand Rathi and Opera Solutions amongst others.
The campus also saw the
participation of marketing giants like P & G and HUL. Other marketing firms on
campus included Nokia, ITC, Nestle and Asian Paints, who also hired in good
numbers.
Rise in
Salaries & Profiles
The placement figures continue to
follow a northward trend both in terms of the offers and the profiles offered to
students. The average domestic salary across slots this
year for the domestic segment is Rs. 16.4 Lakhs per annum. The
highest domestic salary has been in the range of Rs. 65
to Rs. 70 Lakhs per annum, offered by a leading international
investment bank. Also, Mckinsey offered the profile of an Associate to a
student, which is higher than what is normally offered at IIMs.
This successful placement of 291
students in just 4 days has once again re-affirmed IIM Calcutta as being the
campus of choice for recruiters from India and abroad.
