37% of the
Batch Chooses Consulting Career at IIM Bangalore Final Placements
The Final Placement Process
at IIM Bangalore concluded on Saturday, the 8th of March, by the first day of
Slot Two of the process, with IIM-B setting new benchmarks for the Indian MBA
graduates.
This year leading global
consulting firms flocked down to IIM-B making a beeline for the students along
with the global investment banks and marketing firms. The consulting recruiters
who visited the IIM-B campus were McKinsey & Co, Boston Consulting Group, Bain &
Co., AT Kearney, Arthur D. Little, Al Ghanim, Accenture, KPMG and Diamond
Consulting. This year also witnessed the consulting major Oliver Wyman
recruiting students for the first time.
Overall, 37% of the batch
accepted a position in a consulting career, known for its demand for
multi-functional skills, cutting across Finance, Strategy and Marketing. This
was again the highest across IIMs and a strong testimony to the pedigree of
students at IIM-B. McKinsey & Co. was the single largest recruiter among
the consulting firms in this years placement, inducting 15 IIM-B students in
their fold. The other sectors that have seen significant number of positions
being offered include Finance (19%), Investment Banking (21%), Marketing (7%),
IT (6%), Operations, Lifestyle and General Management (10%).
Global
Growth
The increasing number of
global recruiters bears a strong testimony to the maturing global reputation
of IIM-B. This year, the IIM-B campus hosted leading multinationals like
McKinsey & Co., Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Co., Merrill Lynch, Lehman
Brothers, ABN AMRO, Bloomberg (New York), Freudenberg (Germany), and Arqaam
Capital, amongst others.
International firms like
Blackstone Group, Olivery Wyman, ING Asia, PRTM Consulting, Deutsche Bank
Corporate Finance, Aloe Group, Caterpillar, John Deere, and Lebua Hotels visited
the IIMB campus for the first time bringing diversity to the list of recruiters
both in profiles and geographies on offer. Arthur D. Little, Arqaam Capital and
UAE Exchange International offered positions in Dubai and the Middle-East,
increasing the global reach of IIM Bangalore students.
Private Equity Firms like
Blackstone Group, Aloe Group and Arqaam Capital that recruit for highly
specialized positions have shown a growing interest in IIM-B students.
International Placements
IIM-B created history this time
with 133 students internationally placed out
of the Batch of 256, that is, more than 50%
of the batch, taking up offers from Slot Zero firms; a statistic unmatched
across the IIMs. The total number of Slot Zero offers itself increased as a
whole as students were recruited for diverse profiles and geographies. The
number of companies on Slot Zero went upto 32, which shows a substantial
increase in the number of participating companies.
Slot One
This time an Indian Bank came
down to recruit for its global locations. ICICI offered positions for its London
and Singapore offices. A total number of 105 students (representing 40% of the
batch) were placed on Slot one that boasted of a huge diversity in terms of the
jobs and positions offered.
The international offers
continued to pour in on Slot One with companies like ICICI Bank, UAE Exchange,
and others recruiting IIM-B students in huge numbers. The average domestic
salary of the batch increased tremendously.
A total of 120 companies
confirmed participation of which the number of Day Zero and international
positions comes to a spectacular 103 students.
Preferred
B-school
Several companies descended to
IIM-B alone for the Placement process, including Barclays Capital, Lehman IBD,
BNP Paribas, Blackstone Group, and UAE Exchange. The exclusivity that IIM-B has
seen, despite its relatively young genealogy, earmarks IIM-B as the most
preferred Indian B-school for multinationals. Amidst concerns of global
recession, investment banks re-affirmed their faith in IIM Bangalore and our
students by taking part in the recruitment process without a drop in enthusiasm.
The recruiters were unequivocal
in their praise for the institute and its students. "As we expand our practice
in India, IIM Bangalore will continue to be a key source of talent for us. As a
day zero recruiter at IIM Bangalore, we have always found candidates who meet
all our recruiting criteria around strong problem solving skills, good
communication skills and leadership potential," - said Mr. Vinod Nair,
Managing Director, Diamond Consultants.
IIM-B continues to be a favourite
amongst national as well as international recruiters. But more than anything
else, what the phenomenal placement process has proved is that the students at
this premier institute are at par with students across the world. Today, more
than a premier Indian B-school, IIM-B can very well expect to be counted as one
of the worlds leading B-schools.
