DOMS-IIT Roorkee
Organising National Level Paper Presentation Contest 'Jigyasa 2007'
Theme: "Digital Inclusion"
Last Date for Entry Submission: January 31, 2007
"Wonder is the foundation of
all philosophy, inquiry the progress, ignorance the end."
- Michel de Montaigne
From fire to electricity or
wheels to automobiles, it has been a phenomenal journey. And it is this faculty
of wonder and spirit of enquiry that has been incessantly driving mankind on its
journey.
The mother of all progress has been mans ceaseless wonder, and an inherent urge
to seek the truth, all of which is subsumed in a characteristically pithy
Sanskrit term - Jigyasa.
Jigyasa, a National Level Paper
Presentation Contest and the flagship event of the Department of Management
Studies at IIT Roorkee, has evolved along with the department since its very
inception. In the past, it has turned the spotlights on emerging topics such as
Knowledge Management, M-Commerce, Innovation, Emerging technologies and
Globalization. Traditionally, Jigyasa has been endorsed by prestigious
organizations like TCS, BHEL, DSIR, NPC, etc.
Jigyasa - A Quest for Knowledge -
encourages different perspectives and learning among various management
institutes all over India, for evolving a broad-based, comprehensive insight.
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and so, a fresh panorama is the
intended outcome of a well-directed idea churning exercise that is Jigyasa. It
provides students with a framework to converge their power of vision to a single
idea and an opportunity to network, compete and grow with the best.
Digital
Inclusion
A key driver of current societal
change is the information and communication technologies. We need a digitally
inclusive society - there are no two options on that, and the question looming
large is how to achieve it. What is the degree of information access that a
common Indian man or woman has today, and what can be done about it? What are
the essential skills that are even more important than the hardware or software
part of information seeking? How do we engender the confidence and enthusiasm
that is so much a pre-requisite to adapt new technologies to work for us, the
masses?
Digital Inclusion matters because
it is important for the economic well-being of our people and country. It
matters for the development of a skilled and knowledgeable workforce. It matters
because it is important for the maintenance of successful and vibrant local
communities. But most of all, it matters for the individual who can, through
technology, learn, work, play, entertain, inform and discover. To be denied
access to this resource would impoverish the individual, and ultimately, the
nation. Indifference to the growing divide could exacerbate an already
precarious position in India. No economy or business can grow or develop unless
all stakeholders in the system and society are taken care of.
