IMI-Delhi: An
International School
- by Shivanku Misra *
The International Management
Institute (IMI), New Delhi, enjoys the pride of being Indias first
corporate-sponsored B-school. IMI is placed today as one of the best B-schools
in India and is well known for the superior quality of the intellectual capital
that it houses.
It now strives to be a well-recognised institute across the globe. This is what
makes me feel proud of being a part of the IMI fraternity.
The self-contained campus located
in the heart of the countrys capital has various programmes in the management
field. The post graduate programme of IMI has been rated highly amongst the
B-schools in India by the industry. The Post Graduate Programme in International
Management is acknowledged globally by management institutions and corporate
organisations alike. A testimonial to this is the number of international
students that we have on campus (currently, we have around 12-15 international
students from France, Iraq, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea,
Uzbekistan, Tunisia, etc.). The cultural mix that IMI has on its campus provides
a unique experience and one that Ill cherish for life.
The recent batch includes
students with years of quality work-experience with companies like P&G, GE,
Delphi, TCS, General Motors, etc. Having a large number of people with work
experience provides an opportunity for out-of-class learning. Students who opt
for live projects where they work on a particular project for an organisation
while studying, bring in their fresh experience to the classroom discussions,
thereby making them more meaningful. Moreover, there is a series of guest
lectures conducted for the students wherein we have people coming from the
industry to address the students. For example, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Mohammad
Yunus visited the campus recently.
The student culture at IMI is
also at par to the best of the management institutes globally. The students are
engaged in various activities and work as members of various student committees
like the media cell, admissions committee, placement committee, HR club,
cultural secretary association, alumni committee, movie club, and others. The
students organise various socio-cultural events like "Hindi Diwas", blood
donation camps, camps for deprived children, etc.
Life at campus is a mix of hard
work and parties. We at IMI believe in the concept of "Work Hard and Party
Harder". Lets peep into life of an IMI student for one day. He gets up early in
the morning and goes to the beautiful and scenic Sanjay Van just behind the
college for jogging. He comes back and attends a class where he presents a case
analysis. Post lunch he does some committee work, plays volleyball / badminton,
does assignments and then goes for dinner around 9.00 pm. Post dinner he goes to
the library, studies in his group, does his live project for a while, checks his
official mail if there are some official announcements for classes, etc., goes
down to the amphitheatre and chats with friends who may generally be
international students and discusses why Saddam was given gallows or why India
is deemed to become a superpower. And finally sleeps. IMI is the name of that
experience which the students would strive to preserve for life.
All in all, IMI is a rising giant
with a vision of leading the world in terms of not only management education but
also by being an organisation with a culture that sets the standards for others
to follow.
