A total of 71 students
received offers at foreign locations like New York, London, Tokyo, Hong
Kong, Singapore, Bonn, Munich, Berlin, Bangkok and Shanghai.
IIM Bangalore also put
forward a far more aggressive face this year, using its alumni network
and class profile to lure first-time recruiters
font class="text" like Merrill Lynch, Citigroup Global Market, Credit Suisse First Boston,
UBS and Sandstone Capital to its campus. Indian companies like TAS,
Aditya Birla Group, Proctor & Gamble, IClCI, and Metlife offered
overseas exposure to students. Lehman Brothers was the largest foreign
recruiter with 13 students deciding to do their internship with the
firm.
The students felt that
cutting-edge new projects and working with top-ranking firms lured them
to investment banking and finance. Interestingly, most of the students
who opted for these two sectors have engineering background. And with
summers being a leading indicator of the final placements to come,
competition for top talent scheduled for March 2007 would be worth
watching.
Quotes from the
academic people: -
"The courses offered by
different institutions are according to the needs of the industry. It is
always better to go for a dual specialisation in the MBA programme,"
says Mukund Sharma, a faculty for MBA (Finance). According to him, "In
Karnataka, the syllabus of Vishweshwaraiah Technology University (VTU),
when compared to the CA and ICWA, the practicle exposure is less, but
the scope for MBA (Finance) is more as the industry requirement and the
students outflow is less. Prospects are good as the CA and ICWA passing
percentage is lower."
According to Rajesh
Krishna, Associate Professor in Kristu College of Management, "The main
skills needed for an MBA (Finance) graduate is to identify, measure and
analyse investment risks associated with interest rates, currency
exchange and equity markets. They have to concentrate on acquiring
techniques to manage and control risk through the use of
over-the-counter and exchange-traded derivatives, and it is necessary to
consult specialists in derivatives trading and risk management."
Apart from MBA (Finance),
there are a few specialised courses offered by some reputed educational
institutions like IIMs, ICFAI, etc. One of the courses in demand is M.S.
(Finance) offered by ICFAI, Hyderabad. |
