The University
of London was established by Royal Charter in 1836 and is one of Europe's
pre-eminent universities, in the same league as Oxford and Cambridge in the UK,
recognized globally as a leader in Higher education. It is a federation of
distinct, separate and, in many cases, multi-faculty self governing Colleges,
together with specialist Institutes. The External Programme was established in
1858 to make University of London degrees accessible to students who were not
able to study at the University in the conventional way.
Postgraduate
level programmes are offered by distance study in a wide range of disciplines :
Management (MBA), Finance, Economics, Information Security, Law, Agriculture and
Livestock, Health, Environment, Education, Veterinary Science, HRM, Public
Policy, Rural Development etc. At this level the range of material and support
provided to students varies dependent on the specific qualification.
In the majority
of post graduate diplomas and degrees, students receive everything they need as
a package or online, in order to complete their study. This may include text
books, study guides for units, readers, audio/video tapes and the relevant
Regulations and past examination papers.
Academic staff
from the Lead College set assignments and give individual guidance and feedback.
Courses are increasingly introducing innovative Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
techniques and through them, access to the University of London Library.
Students are also encouraged to network with each other.
