The University
of London was established by Royal Charter in 1836 and is one of Europe's
pre-eminent universities, in the same league as Oxford and Cambridge in the UK,
recognized globally as a leader in Higher education. It is a federation of
distinct, separate and, in many cases, multi-faculty self governing Colleges,
together with specialist Institutes. The External Programme was established in
1858 to make University of London degrees accessible to students who were not
able to study at the University in the conventional way.
The University
offers Undergraduate courses by distance learning in a wide range of subjects
including : Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business, Business Administration,
Computing and Information Systems, Classical Studies, Development and economics,
Economics, Management, Humanities, History, Laws, Philosophy, Politics and
International Relations, Sociology and Theology.
Students
receive an introductory package of study materials. This may include Subject
guides, Regulations and Student Handbook, Resource Guide, past examination
papers and examiners reports. However, students on some programmes are required
to purchase their own text books. In some countries tutorial support may also be
available. Technology provides additional support through the new Virtual
Learning Environment (VLE). Students are also encouraged to network with each
other
